Delhi : Liquor Shops closing, Distributors surrendering Licenses : What ails the New Excise Policy of the Capital ?

As the clamour grows, Delhi could be staring at an acute shortage of alcohol from June 1

The Arvind Kejriwal led Aam Aadmi Party governement of Delhi, came with a New Excise Policy saying that it would be providing world class brands and amenities to consumers of alcohol. The policy showed dreams of the sky to the residents of Delhi but it seems that the dreams stand shattered. More and more shops are closing by the passage of each day. Even distributors are surrendering licences at the drop of the hat.

Very recently, on May 02, 2022, Universal Distributors have surrendered their L7Z licences for Zone nos. 19 and 29.

The letter given to the Excise Department of Delhi Government, signed by Mr. Bharat Verma, Partner, Universal Distributors, goes on to say that the surrender of the licences is because of “losses being incurred by our company due to policy not being business friendly”.

It goes on to say “despite opening maximum number of shops and making them world class, we have not been able to survive due to the erratic discounting policy and no clarity on non-confirming area fees”.

Copies of both the letters written by Universal Distributors is given below for the benefit of the viewers of www.bharatvigilante.com

PATH2WAYS HR SOLUTIONS PRIVATE LIMITED, which was awarded a similar license for Zone 25, has also given a similar representation to the Excise Department of Delhi Government.

Glow Tradex India Private Limited has shown similar concerns doing business in Delhi.

And as liquor vend owners and distributors are facing adverse business condition, this is certainly not a good sign for the much-touted New Liquor Policy of Delhi. Moreover, if the same trend continues with further closure of vends and surrender of licences by distributors, the city of Delhi, the Capital of India or Desh ka Dil Dilli – could be staring at a huge alcohol crisis by the start of the next month, i.e. June 2022.

And again, this means loss of excise duty to the Government of Delhi and cheers to neighbouring Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, as they would be in a better position in terms of not only demand and supply but also of making huge profits at the cost of Delhi.
